An over night tour with dogsledding in Sälen
“There is something about getting a deeper knowledge of what you are doing. I find that more and more guests wants to take part of the adventure, not just passively watching”
-Ludwig , Owner
Starting from Sälen, we set off on a 24-hour adventure with our dogs. Both beginners and slightly more seasoned adventurers are welcomed to a memory of a lifetime. In general, you can say that the earlier in the season the tour starts, the tougher the conditions. Of course, we adapt the tour to the participants and the weather conditions of the day.
The tour goes over our mountains down through the forest to Vålbrändan’s old farmhouse. Here, drinking water is fetched in buckets and heat is extracted from wood in wood-burning stoves or open fires – this is also how all food is prepared. This tour gives you an in-depth knowledge of dog sled driving and together we assemble our teams before heading out into the wilderness.
We hang in cabins and sleep in tents. Here there is a sauna and the possibility to arrange transportation for drinks and food separately, which means that the trip can be as relaxing and luxurious as it is exciting.
On the sled you drive in pairs. It is a convenient way to be able to help each other with harnessing your dogs, during the actual drive and finally to feed your colleagues with whom you have created a very special bond after a full day.
Itinerary
Arrival
We rendezvous at the agreed meeting point at about 10:30 am. Before heading up the mountain, we prepare all our gear and pack it safely into the sleds. Each team will carry their own gear but also some mutual equipment. You will get introduced to the dogs and also get all necessary safety instructions on how to get along with your team and how to drive. Before sunset we will reach the mountain lodge.
Before heating up the sauna and preparing supper we will give the dogs their well earned food and straw for bedding.
Day 2
We get up at sunrise to feed the dogs. If the peachy colors of the sun rising doesn’t get you up, the super cosy dogs absolutely will. Their love peaks in the morning and its a magical hour that will stay with you forever. After their breakfast we prepare ours before heading out.
The tour is at it’s end at approx 1 to 2 pm

DO WE DRIVE THE TEAMS OURSELVES?
Yes, we operate our tours by letting you drive the dogs. There is of course a guide on the first team and you will get good instructions before we leave. There is nothing to worry about. All our costumers are beginners…
HOW MUCH WEIGHT CAN THE DOGS PULL?
Our dogs begin their training early autumn and can run at least 30 km a day. As a matter a fact, its really important to let these dogs exercise to stay both physically and mentally fit. They can pull approximately 210 kg/sled.
CAN ANYONE DRIVE A SLED?
Most of our customers are newbies but its is really important that when you make your reservation you let us know about any physical limitations that may restrict you from driving. If you are fit enough to go skiing, you are fit enough to mush. Otherwise, you can most likely go with the guide on his/her sled.
I AM PREGNANT, IS IT A GOOD IDEA TO GO?
It is quite bumpy and if you feel uncertain, please contact us for further details.
HOW DO I PAY?
You pay the tour when you make your reservation or by invoice.
IS THE TOUR CANCELLED IF ITS BAD WEATHER?
We always adjust our tours so they are suited for every weather condition. Snow, wind and cold are part of the environment that we work in and give the tour another dimension. But have in mind that you should dress for a cold experience. Avoid cotton socks and always wear gloves and a hat of sorts. Please have a look at nordicadventure.com if you feel that you need some proper gear!
What about insurance?
Well, to tell you the truth, you travel at own risk. That means that you might have to check your own accidental insurance policies and if you are traveling with a corporate group, check with your boss on how you are covered.
We have a traveling warranty insurance with the colleagues of chambers
If payed for cancellation insurance, what does that give me?
Please check the section about cancellation insurance here
